jean-michel basquiat

Debra N. Mancoff gives only one example of Jean-Michel Basquiat's
painting - and here is how his Charles the First (1982) acrylic and oil
paintstick on canvas, three panels, 198.1 x 158.1 work of Art spoke to
me:

~not completely abstract

~childlike simplicity

~a background of mainly rich yellow and two panels - one done half
in deep blue and another 3/4 in black

~readable words or pharses - if not immediately understandable:

Haloes
Fifty n i ne  cent.

Thor

X- MN

193

MOST KINGS GET THIER HEAD CUT OFF.

1953

COPYRIGHT.

OPERA

CHEROKEE

MARVEL COMICS (crossed off)

~in this painting there are recognizable shapes along with - to me -
what look like spatters and scribbles

I like this painting.

I like this Artist's Abstract Style.

I love the Colors in this Painting.

This Painting Speaks To Me Without My Knowing For Sure What
The Artist Is Trying to Convey.
~~~
Jean-Michel Basquiat was born on December 22nd, 1960 in Brooklyn, New York.
He died on August 12th in New York City.
At the age of  22.
I wonder why.
  1. And who are you Abso - to say What Is Art and What Isn't?
    I Happen To Believe That Grafitti IS Art.
    But I certainly do not approve of People putting their Art anyplace they want to without the Permission of the People who Own That Property.
    But Abso - Grafitti may indeed be The Very Core Of Art Itself.
    The Spontaneous Inherent Nature Of The Creative Soul - The Inability
    of the Creative Person to Resist This Creative Urge.
    Like my spontaneous and create urge to shut people up by punching them in the face? THAT is "art," too? Who knew?
  3. "Creating" means "loving something BEFORE ir exists. Hate and 'creation' have little in common... especially when the 'object' that the so-called artist "loves" is "himself".
  4. "Hate" and "Resentment" make lousy "art". So lousy, that it isn't worthy of the name.
  5. and btw, the next time you talk to Bill Maher, tell him that it makes for terrible 'comedy', too.
  6. Abso - 'Porn isn't art either'
    On this we agree Abso.
    For me Porn is trash.
    100%.
    And that's all I have to say about That.
  7. Abso - This is a side of you that I've never seen.
    No Abso - wanting to shut someone up by Punching them in the face is not Art. That is hostility that is coming close to being out of Control - and it may bring attention to the Problem - but it is not the Answer.
  8. I do not understand your next two Commnents Abso.
  9. 'the next time you talk to Bill Maher, tell him that it makes for terrible 'comedy' too.'
    Abso - There is a major fallacy here:
    I have NEVER talked to Bill Maher so that the two words 'next and time' simply do not make sense.
    But Abso - do you doubt that my only thought now - and it is virutally all I think about - is that not WHEN am I going to talk to Bill - but just how soon is that going to happen. I can hardly contain myself because I want so badly to talk with him. I have so much I want to say to him.
    As for your Hostilty toward him - and the 'Hate' and 'Resentment'
    that you claim HE expresses through his Comedy - well I Belive that can all be resolved - but not until I TALK TO BILL.
  10. Abso - I have never met Bill Maher - let alone talked to him.
    But I will say this about Bill - at one Point in his Show Friday night I recognized that the Level Of His Intelligence is almost scary.
    And that is why Bill turns to Comedy - so often confusing me -
    BECAUSE I GET SO WRAPPED UP IN HIS HIGH INTELLIGENCE THAT I FORGET HE THINKS OF HIMSELF AS A COMEDIAN.
  11. My last two comments may seem repetitive and even confusing.
    That is because I thought the first one was accidently deleted - then it was there.
    I will leave them both.
  12. I Believe that straightening out the Hostility felt by People towards Bill Maher is the Key To Solving The Problems That Our
    Country Is Facing Today.
  13. Real art, no matter how "lowly" its' origin, contains no hate.
    And if the audience can detect a stream of hate... they should walk out. And I would walk out on Bill Maher.
  14. The people are NOT the problem...
  15. Abso - 'and if the audience can detect a stream of hate...they should walk out'
    I own two videos of Bill Maher's standup comedy - I'm Swiss and
    But I'm Not Wrong. I have watched both of those videos a number of times.
    After I had become familiar with what Bill was saying in those videos - more and more I turned my attention to other things.
    And one of those things is the audience:
    ~Bill plays standup comedy in large auditoriums
    ~when he walks on stage the audience in both of those videos spontaneously jump to their feet applauding
    ~throughout both videos the faces of the audience are shown - and there are many reactions on those faces -
    laughter
    intense concentration
    serious
    etc.
    ~in But I'm Not Wrong there is a couple seated in the first row - Conseratives obviously - determined not to applaud - but they cannot stop themselves from laughing
    Bill leaves his audiences 'begging for more - although he comes right out and says - to the audience - that when he starts talking about religion some people do walk out
    Abso - Have you seen these videos?
    If you have - I defy you to show me where you can 'detect a stream of hate' cause I can't find it.
    In Bill's audiences - I see virtually Admiration and Respect - and most importantly - Bill always leaves them Laughing.
    ~~~

    Now Abso - maybe it's time for you to look inside of yourself and try to determine where you hatred of Bill Maher is coming from.

  16. Hey Speedy - 'the people are NOT the problem...'

    There simply isn't enough there for me to comment on.

    Perhaps you would be kind enough to elaborate.

    You could say the same about Hitler or Stalin. They're appealing to the worst parts of their audience's character... to laugh at other people and there beliefs. And then what happened? They merrily walked the Jews to the ovens.
