To quote my 50 American Artists You Should Know book
by Debra N. Mancoff - 'for more than four decades Chuck
Close (b. 1940) has painted portraits. His foremat - grand scale, face
front, neutral expression - rarely varies. But by shifting the
traditional rationale behind portrait painting from capturing
a likeness to pictoral investigaton, Close has completely
redifined one of the most conventional subjects in the history
of art.'
And furthermore - it is so fascinating how Chuck Close does
some of his portraits. From a distance - as in Jasper John's
Food Flag - his portrait of former President Bill Clinton
looks like him - but on closer examination the painting
is really made up of tiny square designs.
I really can't imagine how Chuck Close does this - it is
so amazing - and surely time consuming.
kinda like the artist who painted in dots

frederic edwin church
Leafing through my 50 American Artists You Should Know by
Debra N. Mancoff - my eyes fell upon one of his paintings that
told me to write about him on my next Art Blog post.
It is called The Icebergs - 1861 - and it hangs in the Dallas
Museum of Art.
According to google - this painting is 64 x 112 inches - so it is big.
And it is spectacular.
Because I have always had an special interest in Antarctica it is for
this reason that I find Frederic Church's painting so special.
It is centered on a huge iceberg, with only a glimpse of - but
unmistakenly - a shipwreck in the foreground. And because I have
a very vivid imagination - to me the shipwreck could easily be that
of Shackleton's Endurance- which was pulled under the ice leaving
the great explorer and his crew to survive on their own - and they
did - without one man lost.
There is enough color in the painting to grab the viewer's attention -
but not enough to drown out the reality of the starkness of the iceberg
itself.
Sure - Frederic Edwin Church did other paintings - but if he had never
painted anything else - well - The Icebergs would put him on the map.

henry ossawa tanner
I opened my book about American artists tonight - 50 American
Artists You Should Know by Debra N. Mancoff - and to my
surprise the page about Henery Ossawa Tanner was torn out.
I remembered that I had in fact torn it out so that I could frame
one of his paintings - because I couldn't remember which one.
So I googled Henry Ossawa Tanner.
He was born in 1859 - and died when he was 88.
But that wasn't anything unusual.
Then I saw it.
Henry Ossawa Tanner died in Paris, France - and that was good
enough for me.
He was an Artist - and he died in Paris.
But I googled his paintings because I wanted to see which one I had intended
to frame.
And I knew the instant I saw it: The Disciples See Christ Walking on the Water - 1907.

renascence - the final chapter
I typed this on my Art Blog by mistake - I am
still not used to having both of them.
sorry about that
i ceased and through the breathless hush
that answered me the far-off rush
of herald wings came whispering
like music down the vibrant string
of my ascending prayer and - crash
before the wild wind's whistling lash
the startled storm-clouds reared on high
and plunged in terror down the sky
and the big rain in one black wave
fell from the sky and struck my grave
i know not how such things can be
i ony know there came to me
a fragrance such as never clings
to aught save happy living things
a sound as of some joyous elf
singing sweet songs to please himself
and through and over everything
a sense of glad awakening
the grass a-tiptoe at my ear
whispering to me i could hear
i felt the rain's cool finger-tips
brushed tenderly across my lips
laid gently on my sealed sight
and all at once the heavy night
fell from my eyes and i could see -
a drenched and dripping apple-tree
a last long line of silver rain
a sky grown clear and blue again
and as i looked a quickening gust
of wind blew up to me and thrust
into my face a miracle
of orchard-breath and with the smell
i know not how such things can be!-
i breathed my soul back into me
ah! up then from the ground sprang i
and hailed the earth with such a cry
as is not heard save from a man
who has been dead and lives again.
about the trees my arms i wound
like on gone mad i hugged the ground
i raised my quivering arms on high
i laughed and laughed into the sky
till at my throat a strangling sob
caught fiercely and a great heart-throb
sent instant tears into my eyes
o God i cried no dark disguise
can e'er hereafter hide from me
they radiant identity!
thou canstnot move across the grass
but my quick eyes will see Thee pass
nor speak however silently
but my hushed voice will answer Thee
i know the path that tells Thy way
Through the cool eve of every day
God i can push the grass apart
and lay my finger on Thy heart!
the world stands out on either side
no wider than the heart is wide
above the world is stretched the sky -
no highter than the soul is high
the heart can split the sky in two
and let theface of God shine through
but East and West will pinch the heart
that can not keep them pushed apart
and he whose Soul is flat - the sky
Will Cave In On Him By And By.

jasper johns
While pleading inherent stupidity - and just plain ignorance -
I will admit that until about four years ago I had never heard
of Jasper Johns.
One day I was looking through my Art Book and I'm thinking
Wow! Look at those really neat flag paintings.
Now - I have hanging in my Study aka The Presidents' Room
and jokingly know as The Oval Office a print that I got at
Hobby Lobby of Jasper Johns' Three Flags
(see my getting to know me post.)
Wikipedia says that he was born in 1930 - making him 81 now.
He had a dream one night and when he woke up he painted what
is called his most famous painting: Flag (1954-55) which is hanging
in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Now to me Flag
is just a big, amazing, perfect and beautiful painting of the American
Flag.
but a couple of his Works that I really like are:
Map - (1961) also at the M of MA in NYC.
Food Flag - although you can't see it right away if you get up close
it is an American Flag and is made up of little squares in which are
painted all types of food. Cool.
White Flag - (1955) This is amazing and the largest of JJ's flag paintings.
If you google JJ and look under images you will see that this guy is truly
an artist.
Hands down.
Jasper Johns - I salute you.

getting to know me
Painting is very important to me - and I take it very personally.
Same with if I ever buy a painting - and I actually never do that.
But when I see a painting I like - I google the Artist.
So before you look at my Paintings you can - if you wish - look at
these pictures - which will tell you something about me.

more about my art website
This art website is not just about trying to sell my
paintings.
I would enjoy having comments from other people
who like to paint - to find out if others enjoy Painting as a Creative
Outlet as much as I do.
Also I would love to hear about what type of painting
others do - and the techniques they use.
I always paint with acrylics as this is the meduin that best
conveys the message I am sending. I have never been a
watercolor type of artist - although I love watercolor.
I worked with oils early on - and I think that probably the
Master Painters used oil the most - but I like acrylics and
oil is messy to work with - I think.
I would also enjoy discussing Artists.
Not only the Masters - but I have a book about American
Painters and there is a lot of interesting stuff there.
In fact I will probably post about Artists from time to time.

real vs abstract art
When I started painting I only did paintings that
I call 'Real' - meaning that you can tell what you are
looking at.
More recently I am into Abstract Painting. Except
for Real Paintings that are requested - I intend to
do a lot more Abstract Painting. I do not have as
many examples of my Abstract Art - but I will post
as much as it as possible. Any of the abstract
paintings that appear here my early stuff - some of
which I gave away. Any abstract I do from now on
will have more depth - or layers.
However - the pictures that you see here of my simple
abstract can work for childern's rooms, etc. With these
type of abstact - that don't require so much thought and
time - different colors can easily be used to go with
individual decorating.
I would like to get into doing abstract with 'texture' -
where I glue things onto the canvas and then paint over
it - to make it more interesting.
But this is a technique I will have to develop. : ]

my art
The following pictures are of my paintings.
Under each of the paintings are the dimensions.
I was in a hurry when I measured my paintings
so measurements are approximate. But the
canvases are standard. I find that you can buy
ready made frames for a lot of canvases - but
for some canvases you have to have one cusom
made - and that can be expensive. I watch for
when Hobby Lobby has custom framing half
price. Some paintings are worth paying a lot
for the frame - for others it is not necessary.
The dimensions are in inches.
Some of these paintings are not for sale but I could
most likely duplicate them if anyone is interested.
And they could be altered to suit the interested party.
Some of my paintings are unfinished - and all of these
are for sale - after I finish them. I will finish painting
them as planned or would be willing to paint whatever
someone who wants to buy one of them chooses to
have in the painting.
I have no price set as of yet on my paintings -
that is negotiable - depending on the time I have
to spend painting and how much you can afford
for one of my paintings - on the honor system of
course - and who you are and if I like you or not.
People I really like and have been nice to me will
be paying less for my paintings.
People have been mean to me will pay dearly -
you know who you are.
and read my lips: no more freebies
I do promise three things however:
~my paintings are not cheap
~no one will have to commit to buying
one of my paintings unless they are completely
satisfied
~cash only
and i may want to do a background check to
see if said buyer is worthy of giving one of
my paintings a home : ]
also - if a painting that is finished has a frame
the frame will be included in the price of the
painting
otherwise my paintings will not be sold with
frames
the dimensions of paintings are negotiable
i will buy all materials necessary for paintings -
except frames - except for those that already
exist
buy pays for the shipping costs
the bottom line is: I will paint whatever you want
within the limits of my ablilty - I'm easy folks
One Last Thing: none of my paintings will be
signed so that if I am ever famous you can't
sell them and make a bundle - see?
Dimensions, titles, and abstract paintings will be added at a later date.
